I got sued and won- but its still on my credit report

I got sued and won- but its still on my credit report- what do I do?

If you have been sued by a debt collector or creditor, you should obtain counsel immediately. Many of the attorneys representing these groups are very good lawyers and have handled literally thousands of these same type suits. However, just because they sue you does not mean they are entitled to win automatically or obtain a judgment against you.

Like any other lawsuit, they must prove their case and your are entitled to a trial either in front of a judge or jury. If you are sued, you may have legal defenses that are difficult to present to a judge or jury without the assistance of an attorney.

Sometimes, even after a debt collector has been beaten in court, they will continue to report to the consumer reporting agencies that you still owe the debt. This is done intentionally in hopes that you will pay it so that your mortgage on a new home, a refinance or a car loan will go through.

If you discover the information on your credit report you should file a dispute with the credit reporting agency. Be sure to tell the reporting agency that you disputed the debt in court, that you won the case and ask that they correct the tradeline or account to show that you do not owe the debt. Be sure to include the style of the case (name of the case), civil action number, court where the case was pending, name of the judge and any court papers showing the case was dismissed. Any example would be, XYZ Debt Collectors v. John Smith, CV-06-0123, in the Circuit Court of Jefferson County, Alabama.
